Bridges Changes

As you may have read in the paper the Bridges Kick-Off Classic has been changed this year and we will play Millington at MUS at 7:30pm on Friday, August 21. I want to express my appreciation for all of those who work at and with Bridges on overcoming all of the obstacles that have come up this year around the Classic. The CBHS-Melrose game will be played on Saturday evening at MUS at 7:30 as well. This may be the two best match-ups we have ever had for the Classic.

July OTA's and other info.

We are now back from the break and have once again started our version of the NFL's Off-season Training Activites (OTA's) each morning at 7:00am Monday thru Thursday. We will also have a couple of 7 on 7 activities at the stadium the first being this Thursday at 6:00 pm and also next Tuesday at 6:00 pm.

Our attendance policy for the next 3 weeks remains the same. If you are absent please clear in advance. Official practice begins on Monday, July 27. Practice times are still being adjusted and will be announced next week. Parents can plan on the 10th - 12th graders starting at 7:30 and ending each day around 6:00pm. The 9th graders will practice in the afternoon, probably from 4:00 to 6:00.

Some of the boys are attending two 7 on 7 camps that we will particiapte in at Vanderbilt and Hoover and they will get the info for those this week.

An urgent reminder that we must have all medical forms turned in to Coach Ferebee before July 27.

Equipment Letter for 7th and 8th Graders

June 9, 2009

Dear Parents,

This year we have an arrangement with All American Inc. at 3230 Summer Avenue for our boys to get their football equipment at team prices. You should take your son to All American where he will be professionally fitted for a helmet, shoulder pads, and football pants. Their open hours are 9:00 to 5:00 Monday through Friday. Starting the first Saturday in August they are open on Saturday from 9:00 to 1:00. Make sure you tell the store personnel that you are with MUS. The store will bill us for the helmet, shoulder pads and pants, which we will pass along to you through your school bill. That will total @ $130.   Your son will also receive two game jerseys that the school has ordered and those will cost $20.00 a piece, and will be included in your bill.

Any other equipment you purchase such as shoes, practice jersey and undergarments you will pay for at the store. For those entering the 7th grade this equipment should last you for both your 7th and 8th grade years if cared for properly. For those entering the 8th grade your equipment you purchased last year should still fit. If you are new to school or did not play last year simply follow the directions above. This process allows us to have all of the boys in the safest and best fitting equipment possible. Thanks for your cooperation and address any questions to me. My number is 260-1372.

Sincerely,

Letter to 7th graders

Dear Incoming Seventh Graders and Parents:

Welcome to MUS and to seventh-grade football. We’re excited about our upcoming season and hope for continued success. While we have a couple of months to go, it is important that we get our roster completed, as space is limited.

If you are interested in playing football for the seventh grade this year, please contact me, Jim Burnett, at either (901) 818-7681, or via e-mail at jim.burnett@morgankeegan.com.

The upcoming schedule is full of good teams and we will begin preparation on Thursday, August 6. Generally, we practice three times a week before the season starts and once a week thereafter. Practices before the school year starts will begin at 4:30 p.m. and end at 7:00 p.m. at the MUS Rogers Lacrosse Field near the

Lower

School

.

During the summer, I would recommend getting used to the heat by exercising daily, including stretching. Now would be a good time to let the PlayStations collect some dust and play a lot of pickup games outside!

One of the best things to do in the summer is to attend the MUS Football Camp. This camp is run by the varsity coaches and is great for getting ready to play and also meeting many of your new classmates. Forms are available online at www.musowls.org. or come by the MUS Business Office to sign up.  We have two sessions, July 6-9 and July 13-16.

MUS has arranged with All American Sporting Goods at 3230 Summer Avenue to provide you with discounted prices on helmets, shoulder pads, and pants which can be billed separately.  Please see the enclosed letter from Coach Alston.

I look forward to hearing from any of you who are interested in playing football this fall. Also, for those who want to be a part of the team but do not wish to play, we need two to three seventh-grade boys to be our managers for the year. Just let me know.

I’ll be sending a more detailed letter later in the summer to those who respond. Thanks for your interest and I look forward to seeing you in August.

Sincerely,

Letter to 8th graders

Dear 8th Grade Parents and Players,

The time will soon be here to begin practice for the 8th grade football season. We would like to invite you to participate this year. It does not matter if you played football last year or if you have ever played before. Please accept this invitation to come out and join the team.

I am excited about coaching your son this year, and I look forward to getting to know him and you.  My philosophy is simple.  I want your son to have FUN and be the best he can be.  Every player will have an opportunity to play.  Players who work the hardest will earn the majority of the playing time.  The goal of the coaching staff is to teach your son the fundamentals necessary to be successful in football and life.

Most of you who played last year should be able to wear last year’s equipment.  If you need new equipment please go to All American Sporting Goods, 3230 Summer Avenue, phone # 324-3783.

We are planning to begin practice Monday, August 3 @ 4:00 p.m.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call me @ 766-6130 or email me Bobby.Wade@morganstanley.com.

I would like to recommend that your son attend one of the two sessions of football camp held at MUS.  This is excellent preparation for your son to work on individual and team techniques.  There are two sessions for MUS Football Camp; July 6-9 and July 13-16, the cost is $ 175.00.

Sincerely,

Great Start with June OTA's

If you watch the NFL Network you hear a lot this time of year about OTA's (Off-season Training Activities). That is basically what we have just completed the last 3 weeks and I told the boys this morning that I have been very impressed with our team. Our seniors have stepped up into their role as leaders and the intensity level has been great. We now enter into the TSSAA mandated dead period which allows the boys to come to school and workout but does not allow us as coaches to have contact with them. We have encouraged everyone to remain active but also to sleep a little late the next couple of weeks.

Our next OTA's begin July 6 and we will once again go from 7:00am to 8:30, Monday through Thursday. Those last for 3 weeks until practice begins on Monday, July 27. Once again we request that if the boys are going to miss they let us know in advance. So far most everyone has done a good job of that. We hope everyone stays safe and sound over this break and comes back refreshed and ready to RELOAD!

Summer Workouts Begin

Monday morning, June 1,  at 7:00 am we will begin with our summer workout program for all boys playing football next year grades 9 - 12. These are scheduled each morning Monday thru Thursday from June 1 to June 18 and will usually end at 8:30. Some of the boys are in summer school and we will make sure they are at school on time. Our policy is that all boys should communicate with us when they are unable to attend. We recognize that the boys will miss some sessions because of trips etc. but we do want to stress the importance of their job in communicating with coaches. I would encourage all of the parents to put this assignment on the boys and not do this yourself. We want the boys to learn some accountability lessons. The boys can leave a voice message at 260-1372 or email me at bobby.alston@musowls.org when they cannot attend. Absences should not be a surprise.

These sessions go a long way in preparing our team for the season ahead.

Back to Hoover!!

Today we received our invitation to return to the Hoover 7 on 7 tournament. It's official name is the National Select 7 on 7 Championships. The date is July 23 - 25. We normally take about 20 players to this event. The coaches will let the boys know who needs to go as soon as we can but it does vary over the summer. This is a very well run event that has some of the best high schools in the country in attendance.

Sports Nutrition Supplements

David Ferebee has put together a presentation about sports supplements that is now permanently displayed on our left typelist banner. I hope that all of you parents will find this helpful. The boys hear and read a lot about supplements and much of it is very confusing. I know that David would be glad to answer any questions you might have after reading his report. I am very glad to have someone as knowledgeable and caringas David Ferebee looking after the health and well-being of our boys at MUS.
