The 2007 Diamond Owls came into the season with high expectations after having posted the most successful season in school history the previous year. “The coaching staff and players want expectations to be high, and we were very confident coming into the 2007 season despite losing four All-State players due to graduation and transfer,” said Coach Marc MacMillan ’92.
The Diamond Owls jumped to a quick 4-1 start in the Metro Invitational. However, they lost four games by one run in the Scenic Classic in Chattanooga.
“The four losses were frustrating, but we were in every game we played. The mistakes that led to our losses were in areas in which we could improve,” stated Coach MacMillan. “Therefore, it was not time to hit the panic button as it was more important to make sure that our players learned through the process in order to be prepared for the next game.”
MUS responded positively, beating St. Benedict, 2-1, in extra innings; however, they would turn around and lose to St. Benedict later in the week. “As great as Tuesday’s win was, Thursday’s was just as disappointing,” remarked Coach MacMillan.
After having lost a home-and-home series with Germantown, the Diamond Owls would participate in the prestigious USA Classic for the second time in school history and finish in the top four. While the Owls went 2-2 in tournament play, it was a good showing for MUS and the program.
“We were coming into the USA Classic for only our second time and playing okay baseball. We were able to get two solid pitching performances from Blair Wright and Matt Williams as well as put some runs up early that allowed us to start the tournament at 2-0,” explained Coach MacMillan. “After a disappointing one-run loss the following game to Bolton, we didn’t respond very well in the third-place game against University School of Jackson. Therefore, we felt good about our overall placement but would have liked to close out the tournament on a more positive note.”
With an overall record of 8-10, the Diamond Owls stepped back into league play against ECS. After having won, 8-7, at home, the Owls were hopeful senior and Louisville Slugger Pre-Season All-American Michael Park would be able to return to the mound after having re-aggravated a previous injury. that occurred the first week of the season. Yet still not completely recovered, Park came in relief. The Owls got an excellent performance from Williams but came up short, 4-3.
“It was unfortunate Michael was not able to throw. Any time you have one of the best pitchers in the state on your roster, you feel as if you have a chance to win anytime he steps on the mound.”
After having picked up wins against White Station and Harding Academy, the Diamond Owls split games with Jackson Christian School. According to Coach MacMillan, “The second Jackson Christian game was a devastating blow to our team, as we not only played poorly but also lost Michael for the rest of the season. Our performance plus the realization of his injury took us all by surprise.”
After having been swept by CBHS, the Diamond Owls continued to play hard but came up short in following games against Arlington, Briarcrest, and Brentwood Academy.
“Following the Briarcrest and Brentwood games, it seemed as if the boys finally accepted the cards that we had been dealt, and they really picked up their energy and effort in preparation for the regional tournament,” said Coach MacMillan.
With a four-seed earned, it was now onto the West Tennessee Regional Tournament. The Diamond Owls opened up play against St. Benedict and avenged their previous loss with an 11-1 win. The win pitted MUS against CBHS in the winner’s bracket semifinals. In a game that went back and forth, the Diamond Owls came up short, 11-10. However, Coach MacMillan had nothing but praise for his team.
“I’ve been involved in many games, and this was one of the best games I have ever been a part of,” says MacMillan. “Luke Jensen pitched his heart out, and the boys played an outstanding game against a very good baseball team.”
The Owls bounced back with a hard-fought 7-4 win over FACS. With a state tournament bid on the line, the Diamond Owls faced divisional rival Briarcrest. In a game that saw the Owls get down early, they continued to press forward, led by Wright on the mound, and tied the game in the top of the seventh, 4-4. After both teams could not score in the eighth inning, Briarcrest was able to push a run across the plate in the bottom of the ninth, ending the Owls season.
“I can’t say enough about how well this team responded to the words and work presented to them prior to the tournament in order to give them a chance to return to the Spring Fling. Blair Wright’s 16 innings pitched in four days signified the attitude and determination our players exhibited. It hurt not accomplishing our goals, but when your players leave it all on the field, it’s hard to be disappointed,” stated Coach MacMillan.
The Diamond Owls finished the season with an overall record of 16-20. While seniors Miles DeBardeleben, Jay Edwards, Jensen, Chase Moore, Park, Zach Scott, and Jeffrey Wright graduate, the Owls will work hard to return to the Spring Fling in 2008.
