We are excited to announce that Crews Wellford will be attending the University of Alabama in the fall of 2012! Here is a copy of the press release:
MEMPHIS, Tenn., November 17, 2011 – Memphis University School senior Crews Wellford signed his official commitment letter on Tuesday, November 15, to swim at the University of Alabama. He is the first MUS swimmer to sign a letter of intent to swim for a college.
Wellford is captain of the MUS swimming team. He placed first in the 200-yard freestyle at the 2011 Shelby County Championship Meet, and this summer, he achieved a time fast enough to qualify for the USA Swimming Junior Nationals in the 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard backstroke, and 200-yard individual medley. He competed in Junior Nationals Meet at Stanford University in August and plans to compete in the next meet, held in December, at the University of Texas.
“It is going to be exciting to see him competing at the SEC Championships. He has been a key member of the team and we wish him the best of luck at Alabama,” said MUS Varsity Swim Coach Bryan Parker.
The University of Alabama is the state’s flagship university, and enrolls over 31,000 students at its Tuscaloosa campus. Established in 1831, Alabama is one of the nation’s best public universities, with highly ranked graduate and undergraduate programs, and a respected athletic program that competes in NCAA athletics at the Division I level.
Founded in 1893, MUS is a non-denominational and non-discriminatory college-preparatory day school dedicated to academic excellence and the development of well-rounded young men of strong moral character, consistent with the school’s Christian tradition. With an enrollment of approximately 665 boys in grades 7-12, MUS offers a diverse and engaging curriculum in a supportive environment that balances academics, athletics, and the arts, with an education that teaches the value of integrity and strength of character.

MUS had 3 individual event winners with Tucker Colerick (8th Grade) winning the 100 Individual Medley and Henry Keel (8th) taking the 100 Freestyle and 50 Breaststroke. It was a true team victory with 4 MUS relay teams placing in the top 6 of the 4x50 Yard Freestyle. The Lower School swimmers came through with a victory last weekend over the Memphis Homeschool Education Association, St. George's, St. Agnes/St. Dominic, and White Station Middle School. Henry Keel was the only event winner where he posted a time of 25.11 in the 50 freestyle. The day was filled with strong performances and was a great jump off point for the new season. The next Lower School (4-0) swim meet is November 12th and all swimmers need to email Coach Bryan to let him know if they will not be able to attend.
The Upper School team did a great job in a weekend where they were missing a few swimmers due to Model UN and recruiting trips. In 4 of 6 events (100 Freestyle, 50 Butterfly, 100 Backstroke, and 100 Individual Medley) the Owls showed their impressive depth by placing all 3 scoring athletes in the top 4 spots. In the other 2 events MUS had 3 in the top 5 (500 Freestyle) and 3 of the top 7 (100 Breaststroke). The highlight of the day was the impressive finish by the B relay over White Station's A relay for 2nd place behind the Owls' A team. The next meet for MUS (9-1) is Thursday, December 1. Look for an email about the upcoming month soon!
