Season Wrap-up

WOW! Isn't it funny how sometimes one simple word can capture the essence of everything you want to say. We entered the season with pretty high expectations because we returned some very talented boys from last year but to have things play out the way they did was just.... WOW!Watching Orlando McKay, Joe Tyler, Johnny Jones, Matt Bakke, and Glenn Rogers prepare the boys from lower school to varsity each day with a passion for excellence was and is...WOW! Getting to receive the Coach's Award at the State Track Meet for the team winning a championship in your 25th year as the head coach is...WOW! Having the opportunity to witness three of our guys (Barret Folk, Stephond Allmond, and Jared Davis) go 1-2-3 in the state decathlon, something that has never been done before is...WOW! Watching Barret competing simultaneously in the high jump and pole vault at the state meet with a joyful competitive spirit was...WOW! Just watching Stephond compete through 2 decathlons and the regional and state meet with a cast on his arm and a dogged determination to fight through that obstacle to compete and help the team was...WOW!

Barret and Stephond were our leading point producers throughout the year accounting for over 350 points so for the second year in a row they will share the Robert Hussey Track Most Outstanding Award. Close behind these two were Jared Davis, Keith McBride, and Elliott Bryant each scoring over a 100 points for the year.

A final WOW goes to this group of seniors for not only their physical efforts but for their heart. WIll Benton, Kyle Brown, Jared Davis, Virgil Deanes, Michael Delugach, Barret Folk, Michael Folk, Matt Grisham, and Taylor Reed were a very special group of guys and will be missed but never forgotten. Thanks does not seem to be a word that says enough.

2009 State Champions!

Fueled by the 1-2-3 finish of the decathlon our team put on a near flawless performance on Friday in Murfreesboro. The day began with Matt Grisham (12) capturing 6th place in the 3200M run. Next up was the triple jump, an eventwe were counting on for big points. After a sluggish start we finished with a bang and another 1-2-3 finish as Taylor Reed (12) sets a school record on his final jump to win, followed by Stephond Allmond(11)in 2nd and Jared Davis (12) hitting a big jump on his 4th attempt to finish 3rd. The next field event was the long jump where we also had three entries. Allmond finished 3rd, Reed 5th and Virgil Deanes (12) finished 6th. The final field events were the pole vault and high jump running concurrently. Barret Folk (12) coming off his decathlon championship puts on another great performance as he goes back and forth between events finishing 6th in the high jump but cheered on by his teammates claims the pole vault championship. Jared Davis continued his exceptional week earning a 5th place finish in the high jump. Our performances gave us a commanding lead go into the evening running events but we were not satisfied as our field event crew turned thing over to our sprinters.

Our first event was a season best effort in the 4*100 relay for a 1st place finish. That team was composed of Elliott Bryant (11), Keith McBride (11), Hank Hill (11) and Michael Folk (12). Next up McBride and Bryant combined for 3rd and 4th place in the 100M dash. The strength of our sprinters was back on display in the 4*200 relay as Michael Glenn (10) and James Rantzow (08) ran the first two legs followed by Folk and McBride where we not only won another gold medal but also set a school record. While that pretty  much sealed the championship we were not finished. Bryant runs his best race of the year in the 400m dash to to match the gold medal his brother Miles won 2 years. Next up was the 300m hurdles wherewe get a 6th and 7th place from B. Folk and Davis. McBride was up again in the 200 looking for a little revenge from the 100. He gets it after stumbling out of the blocks and regaining his form to speed not only to a first place medal but also a school record. That led us to the final event, the 4*400 relay where we closed out the meet in a dominating performance with a team of Glenn, Bryant, Wilson Luttrell (10), and fittingly anchored by a senior in Davis.

It was a very happy group of Owls who accepted the championship trophy. Equally important to the performance was the outstanding leadership of coaches Orlando McKay and Joe Tyler. Their selfless service to the team throughout the season inspired our guys to a great season. I also want to thank Matt Bakke for his support as he drove the team up in the bus and filmed the meet for us. We Hit the Trifecta at State Decathlon!!!

What a remarkable performance by our guys Barret Folk, Stephond Allmond, Jared Davis at the state decathlon this past Monday and Tuesday as we finished 1,2,3! Even more exciting was that only 11 points separateted Barret who was in first from Jared who finished 3rd. It was indeed a great day to be an MUS Owl. Cheered on by the tennis team and Coach Taylor each of the boys gave it theirall in the final event - the 1500 meter run. Jared ran a brilliant 4:51.00 to move up from 4th to claim the 3rd spot. Barret's 5:11 was much faster than he had ever run before as he began in 1st place but faced the prospect of getting bumped to 4th without improving his personal best. And while Stephond finished 2nd on thepodium, he proved what kind of champion he is by completing all 10 events with a broken wrist and his arm in a cast. (He even cleared 10'6" in the pole vault). Equally as impressive was the camaraderie the boys shared with each other throughout the competition. Their goal to finish 1st through 3rd regardless of the order had them cheering for each other in every event and then helping each other get ready for the next one. In my 30 something years as a coach it was a very special moment and I want to thank each of them for allowing all of us to be a part. Next up is the state finals this Friday where we begin with a huge advantage thanks to these 3 but each of them has 2 to 4 events as well on Friday.
