Below are the contents of a letter you should receive shortly from the school.
We are excited to have your son participating on the track team. The track team at MUS has a long history of success and we certainly plan on adding to that this year. Five State Championships and over 15 regional titles demonstrate the talents and dedication of many boys over the years.
As the head coach I will work with vaulters and high jumpers and try and make sure that meets run smoothly. Coach Joe Tyler works with all distance runners, Coach Orlando McKay works with the sprinters, hurdlers, long and triple jumpers, and Coach Tommy Harrison works with the throwers.
Briefly I would like to give you our philosophy about track. While track is at its core an individual sport we really focus our efforts on the team attributes. We always have as a goal winning the team title at the regional meet and placing as high as possible at the state. To reach these goals we attempt to peak at the regional meet. In order to accomplish this we have a very definite training plan laid out. Our training is designed to take us on this journey and arrive at our destination at the correct time. While anytime we participate in regular season competition we will compete to win, we will not loose sight of our goal.
For those of you new to track you will quickly discover that track meets can be time consuming. Please feel free to contact me at anytime for help in trying to figure out at what time your son will compete. I can usually give you a pretty good guess.
The track schedule (included) shows the dates of competition. Any conflicts need to be resolved with us as soon as possible.
There are a few items that we will purchase for the boys and for which you will be billed. A track jersey and shorts cost $34.00. If the boys want warm-ups they will cost $75.00. Some of the boys have uniforms from last year which are fine.
I hope that you will enjoy this season. Track is a sport that is pressure packed because there is no place to hide. Everyone will see where each boy places in a competition. I hope that you will celebrate the victories and console the defeats. Let the coaches’ coach. This is the formula that achieves the most success both for your son and for you.
I encourage you to call me with any questions. You can also check the track blog (http://mussports.typepad.com/mus_track/) for daily changes
