Congratulations to the team for another successful season. The team finished in 8th place this past weekend in Chattanooga. We had nine wrestlers make it to the round before medaling. Although we had only two advance to the medal round, everyone who made the trip contributed to the team's success. A great weekend of wrestling, good weather, and a great group of guys. We had tremendous success this year and that is something that will not be forgotten. Congratulations to Sam Goldstein and Nathaniel Kastan for finishing in the top-six of their respective weight classes. We will get some information out soon about the end-of-the-year team party, so stay tuned. Also would like to extend a hand of gratitude to all the parents who provided food, drinks, and support throughout the season.
The team will be traveling via MUS bus on Thursday, Feb. 14 to Chattanooga. We will leave school around noon. The team will be staying at the Courtyard by Marriott in Chattanooga and the phone number for the hotel is (423) 755-0872. We will stay for two nights and return to Memphis late Saturday night/early Sunday morning. If you have any questions, please contact me via email at shaun.gehres@musowls.org.
The varsity wrestlers will travel to Father Ryan High School (Nashville) on Feb. 1 to participate in the TSSAA State Duals Wrestling Tournament. This is the first year that it will be held at Father Ryan, with the site moving away from Clarksville, TN (Clarksville High School). The team will leave school after chapel on Friday (around 10:30am) and will be staying at the Holiday Inn in Brentwood. The phone number is 615 373-2600. The team will stay for one night (Friday) and return home on Saturday. Coach Gehres is also in the process of booking hotels in Chattanooga, so stay posted.
Despite icy conditions in central Alabama, the varsity wrestling team successfully defended its title at the Viking 8 Duals. The team wrestled three dual matches: MUS 71 Sumiton Christian 9; MUS 53 Buckhorn 28; MUS 54 Walker 18. MUS also had a a number of wrestlers go undefeated for all three matches: Barret Folk (130), Andrew Maroda (135), William Alexander (145), Sam Goldstein (152), William McGehee (160), Andrew Amos (189), Andrew Gardella (171,189), and Barrett Huggins (215). Congratulations to the MUS varsity wrestlers for winning its second tournament of the year. The team is now looking ahead to State Duals next weekend and State Individuals, February 15-16.

The freshman team will be back in action next Saturday the city championships, and some of them will be in action during the week as our JV team takes on Southwind and Fayette Academy on Thursday.
This weekend, we have two teams competing at different sites. Some of our freshmen will be competing in the Arlington Throwdown Tournament, at Arlington High School. This tournament will have weigh-ins at 8am and wrestling will begin at 10am. The entry fee will be paid for, so there is no need to send money. Guys that are wrestling in this tournament know who they are.
We also have a Varsity/JV group wrestling out at Collierville High School this weekend in the Collierville Invitational. This tournament will conduct weigh-ins at 8am as well and wrestling should begin right around 10am. The guys participating in the Collierville Tournament also know who they are at this point. If you have any questions, please email me at shaun.gehres@musowls.org.
The team will leave campus around 5pm on Friday afternoon (18th). We will be staying at the Jameson Inn in Jasper, AL the night of the 18th. Weigh-ins on Saturday will run from 7-8am and I would imagine that wrestling would start around 9am. Wrestling will go all day and we should get finished in the early evening. If you have any questions, please email me at shaun.gehres@musowls.org.
After a 4 1/2 hour drive to Pell City on Friday, the team went to the hotel for an hour or so and relaxed before heading to weigh-ins. There were two gyms where wrestling took place, lower weights (103-140lbs.) were in one gym and the bigger guys (145-285lbs.) were in another gym. So we had to relay information back and forth to see how everyone was doing. We began wrestling around 5 p.m. and Phillip Russell (125lbs.) started us off with a victory, followed up by a convincing first period pin by Nathaniel Kastan (171lbs.). They were our only two guys who had matches in the round of 32. The entire team made it to the second day of competition and we placed 6 out of the 13 wrestlers that we took (the tournament only placed the top 4 wrestlers). Going into the final round of competition, the team remained in third place, which is where we were pretty much the entire tournament. We had our 6 guys going for medals and needed wins if we were going to close the gap with the teams ahead of us. Andrew Maroda (135lbs.) started us off with a tremendous first period pin to get the team's momentum going (Andrew's only loss was against the defending AL state champion in the semi-finals). William Alexander (145lbs.) capped his impressive campaign with a pin in the finals, which meant that he had pinned everyone he wrestled. Sam Goldstein (152lbs.) continued the trend and had an impressive victory in the finals, although his opponent injury defaulted, Sam was leading 10-2 at the time. William McGehee (160lbs.) won in the finals as well with a major decision against his opponent from East Ridge (TN.) High School. Nathaniel Kastan wrestled well in his consolation finals match but feel short at the end, but wrestled a tremendous tournament. Our final medal winner was Barrett Huggins (215lbs.). It has been a few years since Barrett has stepped on the mat and he has been training the past 2 months in order to get back into the swing of things. Barrett came home with a third place finish, and then the team waited to hear the final team scores following the last matches of the night. When we did not hear our team called for third place, we started to get excited, partly because we finally got out of the third place position. We were not called out in second place either, and a little excitement started to brew within our group. Memphis University School finished in first place!!! Congratulations to the guys, it was a complete team effort. Every match counted and the guys knew that coming into the tournament.
